Britons facing personal debt 'timebomb'  - [World News] LONDON, March 21 : Britons are facing a $1.92 trillion personal debt "timebomb," a report commissioned by the Conservative Party said Monday. The commission, chaired by former Downing Street policy chief Lord Griffiths of Forestfach, warned any severe external shock -- such as an explosion in oil prices -- would create serious economic and social problems for up to 15 million Britons.

The UK's £1 trillion of unsecured personal debt is a ticking "time bomb" threatening the prosperity of millions of Britons, the Conservatives will warn today.

Vulnerabilities to the market from a sharp hike in oil prices, acts of terrorism and wars may imperil the housekeeping of 15 million people through increases in unforeseen levels of debt repayments, the report commissioned by Shadow Chancellor Oliver Letwin finds.

Oliver Letwin has promised to consider the implications of a report highlighting a £1 trillion personal debt "timebomb" ticking away under the living standards of millions of British households.

The Shadow Chancellor pledged that an incoming Conservative government would review the findings of an independent commission, chaired by former Downing Street policy chief Lord Griffiths of Fforestfach, which include the warning that any major external shock - such as an oil price explosion - would create serious economic and social problems for the 15 million people who struggle with debt repayments.
