How do I check if I’m blacklisted?.... checking your free credit score record.... Credit records are held centrally giving information to companies who request it, on what our credit repayment history is like and if we have any outstanding debts. It is useful to know what information is being held about. That way you know what is being said about you and if there is a problem, you can act to rectify it.
There are two companies that supply 99% of all credit reference requests – these are known as Experian and Equifax . You can get a copy of your credit file by writing to both companies (addresses below). If there are two of you, married or not, you will both need to each ask separately for your individual files. Send a letter requesting your file with your previous address history and cheque or postal order for £2.00 cheque, payable to either Experian or Equifax. A copy of your file will be sent to you in about 14 days. If you believe that you may have debt or a poor credit history, the first step to sorting this out is to get a copy your own file from the credit reference companies and scrutinise the information.
How Can I Request a Change if my Credit File Is Wrong?
If you feel that the information on file is wrong or unfair you can write to the credit agency and ask them to rectify the entry. The agency must reply within 28 days. If you feel that the circumstances of a specific debt problem need to be better explained, you can request a “Note of Correction” to be attached to your file. You can write the note yourself. It should not be more than 200 words long and must not be incorrect, defamatory, frivolous, scandalous or unsuitable. Losing a steady job or suffering illness/injury are good reasons for sending a note, however hearings are not given much time for reasons such as ‘needing time out’ or ‘going off the rails for a while’. If having followed the suggestions above, you feel that you are still not being treated fairly by the credit reference agencies, you can write the OFT.
